Ayala, SM open to bike slots

ADVOCATES for clean air praised the business sector led by Ayala and SM groups in taking steps to put up their own bicycle parking lots.

Mia Bunao, Firefly Brigade project coordinator, called on local governments as well to do their share in promoting a non-polluting and energy-saving means of transportation.

“A local government unit does not need to spend much money to open a bike network,” she told Standard Today.

Bunao said Quezon City together with the cities of Marikina and Makati City including Ortigas Center have parking zones for cyclists which would complement the launch of the Tour of the Fireflies on April 18.

She said SM Group of Companies through corporate social responsibility manager Cathy Uy and her liaison officer Dondie Santos would be presenting a bicycle-use measure in all mall properties.

Not to be outpaced, Ayala Group of Companies has parking lots at the Old Greenbelt and Ayala Stock Exchange in Makati.

Bunao lauded the participation of social entrepreneur Illiac Diaz, actor Raymart Santiago and television host Drew Arellano in previous tours.

“Senator Pia Cayetano, Akbayan Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel, Laguna Lake Development Authority general manager Edgardo Manda and Secretary Angelo Reyes also biked with us,” she said.
