Mediaquest Holdings Inc. plans to launch an international business for newly-acquired television network TV5 in less than three years.

Ray Espinosa, Mediaquest and TV5 president and chief executive, told reporters in a press briefing late Thursday that the international business was part of the company’s plan to make TV5 at par with the country’s top two TV networks.

“That is natural, it’s part of business,” he said.

TV5 expects to turn around its operations in three years, with the overseas operations already launched by that time.

Espinosa cited the big market in North America, Europe and Italy where there is a large concentration of migrant Filipino workers. He added that the Middle East and Japan could also serve as major markets of TV5.

Espinosa said the company planned to initially improve its signal coverage as it lagged behind GMA Network Inc. and ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp., the country’s leading TV networks.

Bobby Barreiro, TV5 executive vice president and chief operating officer, said the network’s signal covered just 60 percent of the Philippines when Mediaquest, a member of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. group, bought the TV network.

“By the middle of net year, we will be able to blanket the whole country,” he said, adding that TV5 would equal ABS-CBN in terms of signal in 2011.

TV5 earlier said it was earmarking P7 billion for capital expenditures this year. The company will spend P5 billion to improve the television network’s transmission, reach and signal strength and the rest for programming and talent acquisition.

Espinosa said Mediaquest would allot another P5 billion in capital outlays next year to make TV5’s coverage nationwide.

“We are prepared to put in capital,” Espinosa said. “To a large extent, it’s about investments,” he said.

Businessman Antonio Cojuangco acquired ABC Development Corp. in October 2003 and relaunched the network in August 2008 with a new lineup of shows under a new brand called TV5.

Mediaquest in October 2009 bought 75 percent of ABC Development and 70 percent of Primedia, a local company engaged in developing programming content for television and marketing of airtime, for less than P4 billion.

  1. Please change your channel station in Davao city which is channel 2,and add more power inorder that your transmission signal to be improved especially in Southern Mindanao,,,presently your signal in Southern Mindanao is being distorted by ABS CBN Channel 2 in Cagayan de Oro City..and you know WHY???? because you have the same channel that you use which is channel 2,,,MATAGAL NA TONG PROBLEMANG ITO,,SINCE NAGLALAUNCHED PA YUNG ABC TV2 DITO SA DAVAO...HINDI TALAGA MAIIMPROVE ANG SIGNAL NG TV5 SA SOUTHERN MINDANAO...I hope you will hear this problem...Kaya lisanin nyo na ang channel 2 na frequency...thanks..Ariel

  2. TV5 signal in Central Mindanao is very poor because of interruption with the other network from ABS-CBN channel-2 in Cagayan de Oro City..The transmission signal of TV5 Davao which used channel-2 in frequency is being distorted with channel-2 ABS-CBN in Cagayan de Oro City kaya hindi maganda ang kinalabasan ng reception ng TV5 Davao with in Central Mindanao kasi mag-agawan ang dalawang network sa parehong channel na ginagamit....

  13. Please hurry up to have your signal in Urdaneta City, Pangasinan. I'm longing to watch your programs clearly and without any signal interruptions. I'm a subscriber here of SkyCable(a Lopez owned company of ABS-CBN). I'm very dismayed lately how Skycable interrupts the signal of TV5, particularly during the time slot of Wiling Willie. All I could watch from TV5 are distorted lines with an audio coming from ABS-CBN programs. Is this deliberate? I hope it is not. I strongly believe in the capacity of Manny Pangilinan. He is now the biggest threat to other giant networks. Keep up the good work and more power!

  16. His present network cannot penetrate more masses especially in rural areas or regional areas because TV5 has limited and smaller coverage when it compare to ABS-CBN and GMA network...We hope so much soon their TV station in regional area shall improve its respective transmission signal so that there will be a lot of viewers in their show...as of now TV5 network is very poor in signal in most of provincial area especially in Cotabato province or in Central Mindanao...

  20. who ever you are destroying willie and his program. You'd better look at yourself in the mirror it might be you who have a negative image as it shows the way you talk against willie.

Shot up if you don't like willie. Stick to your kapamilya network.

  21. hello!!! TV5 is very poor in signal on its aerial transmission in rural areas especially in a suburb of Makilala and Kidapawan City,,the signal strength of their channel 2 TV5 network in Davao City is presently interrupted by the strong signal of ABS-CBN channel 2 in Cagayan De Oro City because they are broadcasting with the same channel spectrum which is channel 2,,,booooo!!! you are only good in cable signal...maybe if you will change your current channel in Davao City which is channel 2 surely the viewers in central Mindanao will embrace your program...It's time to relocate your present channel in Davao City so that your coverage will become wider or else build another relay station in Kidapawan City..that's better...

    ReplyDelete
  22. TV5 must improve their regional transmission signal accross the country especially in Davao City and change their current channel so that it can penetrate in central mindanao...because they are competing with other network from Cagayan De Oro City which is ABS-CBN channel 2...that's why very poor ang signal,,it's a wavy picture and rolling because it is being interrupted by ABS-CBN channel 2 in Cagayan de Oro,,they are the same channel spectrum...

    ReplyDelete
  23. It's time to migrate digital transition to avoid those interferrence with the other network...most channel in digital signal are lying in UHF channel and not on VHF channel...that's the best way to solve the interferrence...pls.. wake up!!!!

  25. No TV5 in Kuwait!!! what's this??? malaki pa kayong kakainin bago nyo malalampasan ang ABS-CBN at GMA network...Unahin nyo muna ang nationwide coverage bago kayo mag-global...hindi nga alam ng mga tao dyan sa Pinas kung ano yan TV5 na iyan...tingnan nyo muna mga regional station nyo sa buong kapuluan sa pinas kung marami ba, meron man kayo pero kukunti lang at mahihina pa ang signal and it is very poor in signal sa mga probinsya..,,ay ano ba yan?? plan wisely before you decide...

    ReplyDelete
  26. TV5 is very poor signal sa mga provinces sa mindanao and most people knows only about Kapamilya and kapuso network...10 years ago only kapamilya network ang clear signal sa mga provinces but nowadays GMA is also following the ABSCBN...kaya nakikompet na rin sila sa ABSCBN...that's better meron competition..

  51. I'm really surprised that there is still a clamor for willie especially from filipinos overseas. i guess this what we call guilty pleasure. anyway, before you guys switch from one network to another, please bear in mind that your kids will also be watching the show. Willie is not exactly the perfect pinoy role model. I'd rather have my kids learn more about filipino culture by letting them watch good old pinoy movies from TFC via Cinema One Global or GMA's counterpart.
